How to choose an electric fireplace
A fireplace chosen on looks alone can end up out of place in the room and unable to give it the heat it needs. Settle these three questions first, then pick the style.

Start with the wall, the framing depth and whether you are willing to open it up. Installation type decides which models are even on the table.
Built-in units are framed into the wall for a flush look and need cavity depth. Wall-mounted units hang on the surface with no framing. Freestanding units and mantel packages sit where you place them. Inserts drop into an existing fireplace opening.

Electric fireplaces heat the room they sit in, not the whole house. Match heater output to your room size, then adjust for insulation and ceiling height.
A standard 1,500W heater produces about 5,000 BTU, enough for a room of roughly 300 sq ft. Poor insulation or high ceilings reduce that coverage. Larger rooms call for a higher-output model.

Check the electrical requirements first, then the features you will use every day: thermostat, timer and a flame-only mode for the months you do not need heat.
Many models plug into a standard outlet. Higher-output and hardwired units can need a dedicated circuit, so check each model's electrical requirements before you order. Plug directly into a wall outlet, never an extension cord or power strip.
